Entries can be picked up from the Grandstand building on the Saturday from 2pm.

Matamata Toastmasters invite you to their "Pink Meeting"

The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation (NZBCF) website states that each year over 2600 New Zealand women and 20 men are diagnosed with breast cancer. 1 in 9 women are at risk at being diagnosed with breast cancer, with a death rate of over 12 per week.

October is Breast Cancer Action Month with a challenge from NZBCF to take action to raise awareness about breast cancer and to raise funds for their life-saving work. And Matamata Toastmasters is doing exactly that.

Matamata Toastmasters has themed their next meeting as a "Pink Meeting" in honour of the breast cancer action month. Matamata Toastmaster's resident naturopath member and experienced health speaker, Linda Hoggard (Naturopathic Diploma) will be delivering a speech on good, bad and xeno-oestrogens and their role in oestrogen dependant cancers. The club's president, Amrita Balaraman, will be delivering a speech on her favourite colour - pink, and there are other fun "pink" events lined up for the evening.

Matamata Toastmasters provides a safe forum to increase self confidence, become a good communicator, develop leadership skills and have fun. So don on something pink, bring along a gold coin donation for the New Zealand Brest Cancer Foundation, and come along to the Matamata Toastmasters' Pink Meeting on Wednesday, 19 October 2011 at the All Saints Church Lounge situated on the corner of Broadway and Hohaia Streets in Matamata at 7.15 pm.

2011 brings a new look to the Putaruru Business Awards.
This year there is a huge focus on Celebrating what Putaruru has to offer.
We have so many fantastic businesses in Putaruru and Pride In Putaruru want to take the opportunity to celebrate them while offering a great night out for the Business Community.
The awards this year are being judged by mystery shoppers who are out there now. The categories will be similar to past years.
The Theme is 'Keeping it Local', and we are offering local entertainment, catering and also the volunteer Fire Brigade who will be in charge of the bar.
The guest speaker for the evening is Danny McBride who has just qualified in rowing for the 2012 paralympics.

Dixie Street Jazz Band

Rod Andrew’s Australian Dixie Street Jazz Band is touring the North Island of New Zealand from Saturday 30th July to Sunday 28th August 2011. There are eighteen concerts including feature appearances during the Bay of Island Jazz And Blues Festival Friday 12th – Sunday 14th August.
The Band is a thoroughly decent, well-ripened bunch of larrikins who formed an ensemble from some of the best Traditional Jazz musicians in Australia. When Piano, Sousaphone, Banjo, Drums, Trombone, Trumpet and Reeds get together, the result is the nerves in your feet twitch whilst some rare musical gems from around 1900 simply grab your whole body and give it a good shake. The musicians bring to their performances ample quantities of good humour which overflows to their audiences, young and old.
Jazz exists primarily at the ‘moment of performance’. You might make a sound recording of it, and transcribe the notes onto a score. But the next live performance won’t sound like that record or that score. Beyond its historical significance, the music itself is sometimes punchy, full of flair and subtle when required, much of it is irresistibly happy. This tour aims at inviting you to experience the ‘moment of performance’ where the collective improvisation of the group provides that ‘sound of surprise’ that can only be experienced live.
The music for this tour was selected for its diverse mix, easy listening and danceablility. Tempo’s change from Ballads to Marches to Ragtime and Stomps. The repertoire highlights the 1900-1930 Golden Years of early Jazz, featuring classic compositions of Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver and Louis Armstrong. In addition, rare tunes seldom performed dating back to 1900 expand on this wonderfully rich repertoire.
Add to this some fine Australian compositions of Ade Mondsborough, Bob Barnard, Roger Bell and Alex Frame and you have an event to remember.
This Jazz is gloriously inclusive, absolutely fun to perform and fills the Halls with colourful sounds of yesteryear.

Well here is the start of The Prattler online.

It has been a hard slog to bring you this edition of the Prattler as we have really struggled to find the funding to produce this edition. For this reason I would like to acknowledge the kind sponsorship we have received from Buttermilk, (a concept put forward by our Trustee Sherie Allison) helped by the fact that Annie Waterworth, Pride In Putaruru’s former Manager, is now managing this site. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. For those of you who do not know who Buttermilk is please turn to the middle pages of this edition to get an insight into what they are up to in our small town and please take the time to fill in the questionnaire on the back page and don’t forget to post it into the box at the front of Unichem Chemists on Princes Street or via mail to PO Box 377, TAURANGA.

I have made a feature of our schools this edition with them all taking up the front 8 pages. I would like to acknowledge the support that we have received from our local schools, with all schools opting to be involved with the Prattler and submitting to each edition to keep you all up to date with what they are up to.

As you may have seen there has been some changes at Putaruru Information Centre. Next time your going by, stop in and say hello to Memorie Brooky, the new Manager. Memorie’s family come from Matamata and she has worked in both Matamata and Hamilton i-Sites. She has a vast of knowledge of tourism and is learning a lot about Putaruru with support from myself and Jan Kinloch.

As we are still to secure funding for further editions, if there is anyone out there wanting to sponsor the next issue of this community publication, please contact me by any of the methods listed below.

Anne Berben JP. As Manager of the Putaruru Information Centre, for the past 3 years I would like to thank you the Putaruru residents for your great support . As my contract ends on the 30 June, My time Managing the centre has been a wonderful achievement. Interacting with locals and International Tourists alike. I would like to thank my Staff Jan Kinloch, Shirley Wilson, Ron Carter, for their support, and making the Information Centre a great place to be. The Information Centre over the past three years has grown from strength to strength, with the statistics growing from 6500 to 11000 this year. I am excited with this growth of the Centre. It is about 70% used by locals. Thanks also to Maurice Smith. Anne Berben JP.

Following the AGM on Sunday 26^th June we congratulate Joann Scheres the new club president, Lindsay Glover the new Vice President and David Schroeder and Mike White the new additions to the committee. Gilbert Hawkes, Wayne Ward and Heather Spinley remain for the new term.

Best wishes to Ron Macdonald the outgoing president who stood down after three years.

Jo and her team are keen to do what it takes to make the Club The Place to go for games, entertainment, dining out and socialising. They are determined to shake off the recession and get on with making the club a vibrant happy place for all.

Jo and Lindsay are local farmers and would love to see locals farmers make The Club their night off! Members and prospective members around Putaruru watch this space as we’ll be a regular in The Prattler.

Waikato Duet “Axis” will be playing on Saturday 23^rd July at our “SEVENTIES NIGHT” do come along and dress up. It is a special licensed promotional evening so we love to see some prospective members come along and enjoy the open evening with us. Pop in for dinner from 6pm and the music starts at 7.45pm.

The Last Thursday of each month is Quiz Night. $10 per team of 4, registration 7.15pm.

Last week, I confirmed Sue Nicholson from Sensing Murder to come to Putaruru at the end of September. In addition to healings and workshops, Sue will be doing a live show on Friday 1st October at the Plaza, and the whole event will take place over 4 days....YAY!

One on one healings will be at the Central North Island Kindergarten rooms on Glenshea Street on Tuesday 28th September AND Wednesday 29th September - healings take around 30 minutes approx and cost $50. Be in quick as the first day is almost booked up!

The live show in the evening of Friday 1st October is $55 per ticket, and this will take place at The Plaza Theatre on Kensington Street.

This is an event where businesses are congratulated and recognised by the services they provide to members of our community. What is special about how these businesses are placed in their catergories is that it is the community who are the judges. It is a businesses community that make the best judges because many of them use the business more than once and know if the services and customer service is consitent.

The theme for the 2010 Business awards is Spring Fling. After the 2009 business awards where people danced the night away till all hours, we will guarantee that this years promises to be just as great.

The Peter Kenyon conference kicked off on Tuesday 20th April with a Putaruru only session. This session was a cafe style meeting which encouraged all who attend to put forward their thoughts and brain storm ideas with other members of our community. Many positive things happened within this session from identifying their personal thoughts about our community to where they would like to see Putaruru in the future. Throughout the session fantastic and acheivable ideas to drive our community forward were put forward and Pride in Putaruru have recorded all these ideas and the people interested in making these ideas turn into reality.

It was great to see members of our community become excited and inspired at the line 'if its to be its up to me'. One of the key points identified was that many people within Putaruru have a negative outlook towards our community and in order to drive Putaruru forward we need to start talking our town and community up and change it from the inside out. We urge all people within our community to start focusing on all the great phsyical, social and environmental assets we have because Putaruru really has great foundations that we can use to create an awesome town with an awesome reputation.

From Wednesday to Friday, Peter ran 8 more sessions in the areas of building healthy and resilient communities, business and youth. The team at Pride in Putaruru have received many positive and outstanding comments from all who attend with many of the attendees already making huge positive changes to the way they look at things, run their business and interact with people within their own communitites.

Whoo hoo - Over The Moon Dairy is Over The Moon!

FANTASTIC results for the team at Over The Moon Dairy here in good ol' Putaruru - here is Sues email that came in over the weekend!

We won two classes at the World Championship Cheese Contest, which got us into the finals today! An unbelievable achievement for one of the smallest companies to enter!!!!!

Hi there, I’m writing from Los Angeles on the way home from the World Championship Cheese Contest in Madison, Wisconsin, to bring you news of how Over the Moon has fared this week. This is the biggest cheese competition in the world, and is only held every 2 years. It’s the equivalent of the cheese Olympics with 2318 cheeses in the contest!

Over the Moon has amazingly WON 2 of the 75 classes, which means a gold medal for Tomme (goat and buffalo gouda-style), and another for our Sheep milk cumin pecorino. Pretty amazing for our first batches of both cheeses! We also got a third place (bronze) for our Double Delight (goat and cow brie), and a 5th for our goat feta. So 4 out of our 8 entries have excelled on the world stage and beat big and experienced companies from Europe, USA, Canada and even Australia.

The winners of each class were today being assessed by all of the judges to find the World Champion, so Over the Moon was up against the best cheeses from all over the world. Half of the judges are from the States, and the balance is international. It’s the Brains Trust of the cheese world.

The final round results were announced at midday today. My expectations were pretty low of getting in the first 5 places, but it’s more than a huge buzz just to be represented in the last round. Worth every last hassle of getting here!!! A Swiss Gruyere, a wonderful example, was the winner on the day.

So a heartfelt thanks from me, and the team, for your help, support, and encouragement! I’m looking forward to being home and getting back to the factory.

PUTARURU WATER FESTIVAL 2010 A GREAT SUCCESS!

This years water festival brought over 6000 people through the gates. We are proud that many people within our community came to enjoy all that was on offer throughout the day.

One of the highlight events was Top Team on Water which featured Pride in Putaruru's purposely built inflatable agility course and water walkers. Over 1200 people within our community came to support the teams and were hugely entertained by the great competition.

The winners of Top Team on Water were:

Putaruru Fire Brigade - Winner of Clash of the Codes and for the 2nd year running, winner of the Best Cheaters title!

Adults - The Putaruru-Piako Cheetahs.

Year 5 & 6 - St Marys.

Year 7 & 8 - Te Waotu School.

There were many entries into the Water Festival's Arts and Crafts section from both children and adults. The quality of the arts and crafts were amazing and all who participated should be very proud of their efforts. A big thankyou to entrants as well as the community for viewing the display.

Included in this years Arts and Crafts section was Fluid Fashion where entrants created a fashion piece from the design phase right through to the making of the garment. The pieces that were created were mindblowing and we congratulate all who entered. The overall winners of Fluid Fashion were Lewis Bourne, Maria Clara Mackinnon and Samantha Clark.

The farmers market was a huge hit and was full of delightful and yummy food and high quality crafts.

Vox Nova our jazz band that was playing throughout the afternoon provided a relaxed and fun atmosphere and was a great background to the fluid fashion entrants while on they were on the catwalk.

One of the main focuses on the Water Festival was providing an affordable and great day out for families with lots for children to enjoy. By bringing in huge inflatables and selling tickets for only $2 we were able to give the children alot of fun things to do that didn't break the bank. One of the main attractions proved to be the worlds highest inflatable water slide and people keep going back for more!!

Our nighttime event After Flow was very entertaining with Boogie Monsta pumping out great music throughout and ticket holders enjoying taking on the Mechanical Bull and the Bar fly. Our MC for the night, John Martin from Balloons Funtastic, had the crowd laughing all night due to his risque and clever balloon hats and his infectious laughter and witty sense of humour.

We have received alot of postive feedback about this years festival and are immensely happy that our community enjoyed what we provided throughout the festival. The combination with the A & P association and Putaruru Axemens proved to be very popular and we have received alot of positive feedback also about the combination.

A big thankyou to all involved and support from the community for the Putaruru Water Festival 2010.

All proceeds from the donations will go to the Bible in Schools programme - freshly baked scones with butter, jam and cream, freshly made tea & coffee - all for a gold coin donation, with the money going towards a great cause within our own community! We have made some changes to the 2010 craft
programme as we had such a great response to our 2009 show.

All entries must be delivered to the Grandstand
building on the morning of 27th February between
8 and 9.30am. The Grandstand will be closed for
judging between 9.30am and 12 noon, and will open for viewing between 12 noon and 4.30pm. Exhibits can be removed from the Grandstand after 4.30pm.

Fluid Fashion

Do you fancy yourself as the next GOK Wan, Karen Walker or Stella McCartney?

Pride In Putaruru will be running a Fluid Fashion Show at the 2010 Water Festival..This will now take place at Glenshea Park, 2pm on Saturday 27th February 2010...THIS IS A REAL FASHION SHOW and not wearable art..The theme for the fashion show is WATER.

Fluid fashion is open to anyone from the age of 8 upwards. Children wishing to take part can use this to count towards their PRIDE homework programme for 2010. If you haven’t already received the information from your school please call into Putaruru Information Centre and collect a information pack.

Categories

Street wear for girls or boys
Everyday - ie, what you would wear to the shops.
Party wear - Anything you would wear to a party or night out.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - This mean taking an old piece of clothing and redesigning it, to make it into something Completely different e.g. Taking an old pair of pants and making them into a skirt or bag.

To enter you must first submit a design board that outlines your whole look and the idea behind it, explaining how your design fits the theme.
The board should include examples of fabric, buttons, thread, ribbon anything that you are planning to use in the creation of your outfit. You also need to include images that explain hair, makeup and accessories and a write up explaining the tie between your design and the them. And of course, your design sketch!
The Designs Board is your entry form, and entries have been extended to 12th February to allow for the 2010 PRIDE programme. Age categories are the same as the Arts & Crafts section.

BP Mural

We have just noticed that even though the mural has been featured in the recent edition of the Prattler we haven't loaded it onto the blog.
If you haven't already stopped in at BP to view the mural, it is worth the stop.
What a fantastic effort by 3 local ladies - Fiona Barrett, Alison Hemming and Annie Waterworth. They completed the top layer of the mural after members of the public painted out the existing chalk drawings and created a base for the mural to be painted onto.
A huge thanks to the Creative Communities grant scheme for their support in this project!

A Room at the Inn

Over 600 people came through the doors at this years Room at the Inn. A big thankyou to Mark Reynolds of the Putaruru Hotel who donated the use of the hotel and the Putaruru Combined Churches for supplying the supper and manning the door. This year the community raised over $700 for the Putaruru Bible in Schools programme so a big thankyou to the community for their support.

All of the 2009 rooms were well planned, of high quality and varied greatly. The voting results were:

1st Megan Ince with Santa's Brain. This room was full of orignality and humour and was a snapshot of what goes on in Santa's brain during preparation for christmas.

2nd was the team of Sue Heslop, Helen Haigh and Gillian Robbins with Sugar and Spice. An amazing gingerbread house was the centre piece of this room and the decorations were in harmony with this centrepiece.

3rd was the Putaruru Floral Art group with the Tree Room. An array of beautifully decorated trees made out of different materials filled this room . Angels, flowers and other beautiful decorations added to the impact of this room.

The prize money for the winning room was $120 and a big thankyou goes to the winner Megan Ince who kindly donated her prize money back to Pride in Putaruru.

Putaruru Christmas Float Parade

The theme for 2009 was Tropical Paradise and Putaruru had the pleasure of seeing over 26 floats. A big thankyou to our judges - Gordon Blake, ex South Waikato Mayor, N icola Warrington the Manager of the South Waikato Perfoming Arats Centre (The Plaza) and Megan Ince a South Waikato based Social Worker.

A Room at the inn

After the popularity of this event last year we are running A Room at the Inn once again at the Putaruru Hotel. This years rooms really are masterpieces and appeal to all age brackets and style types. Public viewing and voting is currently happening on Tuesday, Thursdays and Fridays 7-9pm until the 17th of December, entry is a gold coin donation. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners will be announced on the night of the Christmas Variety Show at The Plaza on Friday 18th of December.

Christmas Float Parade

This years parade will be happening on Friday 11th December on Overdale and Princes Street at 6.15pm. The theme this year is tropical paradise, a place that we all dream about being this time of year. Why not come and support our community groups by viewing their fantastic floats, head to A Room at the Inn afterwards and then out into the community to view the entrants in Light up Putaruru.

Come and celebrate the festive season with us this year at the Christmas Variety Night. Come along and see a variety of Christmas dance, songs and Christmas carols with a twist and join in the community Christmas spirit.
All of the towns Christmas promotion prize winners will be drawn between acts on this night.

Rangiura Dementia unit charity house $1 reserve auction

Don't forget that on Saturday 12th December the Rangiura Dementia unit charity house auction will be held at the old South Waikato Marine yards along SH1. There will also be a market day where there will be a range of products on offer. The house auction will start at 1pm.

Artsfest a great weekend with community spirit shining through!!

Putaruru's weekend of Artsfest started with an explosion of talent on show with Putaruru's Got Talent. The acts ranged from vocalists, dancing, instrumentalists and cultural displays to a unicyclist. These acts showed the vast array of talent present within our community and it was great to see a big turnout of community support on the night. Judges placings were:

1st Forest View High School Polinetia Fa'atasi group, an amazing and polished group whose performance of polynesian song, dance and instruments wowed the audience.

2nd Undercover - consisting of Joshua Sager (drums), Christopher Monteith (piano), Grady and Hayden McMahon (violin), their amazing instrumental of the mission impossible theme and spy comedy made this quartet a hit with the crowd.

3rd Brianna McPherson, although Brianna is a year 10 student, her jazz perfromance of Tequila was very professional. Expect to see great things in the world of dance from this young lady.

Saturday saw the start of a stunning community mural depicting the blue springs which will be entered into the Resene mural masterpieces competition.

An exhibition of artwork from local schools was held in the plaza and these pieces showed once again the level and variety of talent within our community. Sandra Ogle kindly donated one of her amazing paintings to the high school student whose art piece impressed her most. Claire Birks of Bella creative kindly donated a portrait sitting to a student whose photography impressed her most.

An exhibition at the Putaruru Hotel on Saturday and Sunday showcased pieces by the floral art group, quliting group, Sandra Ogle, Claire Birks, Fiona Barrett and Fireworks Pottery. Card, chocolate, pottery tile and balloon animal making classes were held which was great fun.

Throughout the weekend the community jumped on board with 'Walk the Line'. This community master piece will be displayed in the Putaruru Information Centre from next week and we urge everyone to view our community creation.

Saturday night saw teams from the Rubix Cube night invade Putaruru. This was a fun night and the winners - Mother Truckers kindly donated their prize money back to Pride in Putaruru. This genorosity shows the community spirit and heart that Putaruru has which we are proud to be a part of.

We are appreciative and proud of the community support we received throughout Putaruru's Artfest weekend and thank all involved.

Putaruru's weekend of Artsfest

This weekends Artsfest kicks off with a showcase of the great talent the South Waikato has. "Putaruru's Got Talent" is on Friday night at the Plaza (not at the Arapuni Hall as previously advertised), starting at 7pm and entry is free!! Refreshments will be able for purchase during the show. The program has a wide range acts and it would be great to have a huge turnout of people to support the talent in our community.

Check out the Schools art exhibition at the Plaza - Saturday and Sunday from 10am - 4pm. Each school will take turns providing light refreshments during the day as a fundraiser.

If you're in town - 'Walk the line' - look out for the big canvas in town and paint on a simple line to help create an artistic masterpiece.

Sign up to be part of the Putaruru community mural, where painters will create a scene depicting the Blue Springs. We shall then enter this mural in the Resene Community Mural Competition.

Call into the Putaruru Hotel on either Saturday or Sunday to see displays of art work, floral displays, photography, patchwork and pottery. On Sunday learn how to shape balloons, make cards and chocolates in addition to all of the above. Charges apply to some classes and places are limited. Rubiks Cube Night is almost here - do you have your team?????

We have the Rubiks Cube night on Saturday 17th October as part of ArtsFest 2009 - you need teams of 6 starting at 6pm at the Putaruru Arms Motel...If you are interested in getting a group together, or coming along and need us to get you into a group, let me know as soon as....$5 individual or $30 per team...

You get a team of 6 together, and the team leader appoints each person a colour in advance - one must be red, one blue, one yellow, one white, one green and one orange.

You can wear Jeans / trousers, however, your tee-shirt / top must be of the colour that you have been appointed.

In addition to your jeans and tee-shirt, you need the following:

eg: My colour is red - I have a red tee shirt.
1 item of blue
1 item of green
1 item of white
1 item of orange
1 item of yellow

These items must be cheap as you will be swapping them with other people. So such items as:
beads, bags, hats, gloves, scarves etc etc etc...

You start at the Putaruru Arms at 6pm until 6.30pm. When the whistle blows, you need to swap a colour to get another to match your tee shirt..

You will then be given 15 minutes to get to the next venue...

The order will be: Putaruru Arms 6pm - 6.30pm
Hog & Hounds 6.45pm - 7.15pm
The Club 7.30pm - 8pm
Crown & Anchor 8.15pm - 8.45pm
Hillbillyz 9pm - 9.30pm
Putaruru Hotel 9.45pm onwards

The final venue is the Putaruru Hotel, and Mark is currently organising entertainment. When the final whistle blows, the first full registered team to the flag with all 6 members in one full colour each (ie, 1 all red, 1 all blue, 1 all yellow and so on) wins half of the money taken in registration. The other half will be used as a fundraiser for the Christmas season of events.....

In the event of a tie - a small quiz has been prepared to determine the winner.....

We suggest that you shop local - such as the $2 shop or coin save or Rainbow Hall in town. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE support the local charity shops, as they DO give the proceeds back to our own community....

Remember that if you have names for your teams and you want to get it onto your tees, we have 2 tee shirt printers here in town - Nick at Simple Sign & Print on Neal Street and The Stitch Witch on Princes Street - they may get busy, so be in quick, and support local wherever you can!!!!!

We also suggest that you alternate alcohol with soft drinks to get full enjoyment of the evening...

Pride In Putaruru would like to thank Pub Charity for their generous support of the 14th Business Excellence Awards, Radio Forestland for their support of the Retail Award and Kay Humphries of Travel Managers Putaruru for her VERY GENEROUS sponsorship of the Business Awards - for the businesses that attended on the night and completed a questionnaire and went in the draw for a weekend in Wellington including flights and accommodation.

We had a fun filled evening with our 10 'Air Hostesses' starting the housekeeping in the style of the airline safety information complete with all hand signals...even down to the hot towels, sick bags and air safety cards - albeit spoof...

PLAZA 50TH CELEBRATIONS ......

The Plaza Theatre is celebrating its 50th year in September 2009. To begin the birthday celebrations “Shane Cortese and his 50’s Jukebox Show Class of 58” will be rocking the theatre’s seats with music from the year The Plaza was born. Shane has starred in many musicals in the West End of London and throughout the United Kingdom where he started his performance career. He returned home for the role of Dominic Warner on Shortland Street - a role the New Zealand public has not forgotten even after the character was killed off in dramatic fashion. He was the street’s longest serving villain, having played him over a two year period.
More recently, Shane danced his way into the hearts of the New Zealand public on the hit show ’Dancing with the Stars’. He and dance partner Nerida Lister shimmied their way into the final, and on their way raised $156,000 for Shane’s chosen charity, the Starship Foundation.

The Class of 58 has played to sell out performances in New Zealand’s largest theatres. They play some of the best Rock ’n’ Roll music ever written, and a memorable part of the show is Shane doing the Elvis numbers, a role he played for a year in London. And if that’s not enough to get you reminiscing, The Plaza would like to take you back to the early picture days of cinema. Saturday and Sunday will host a film festival presented by The New Zealand Film Archives. Saturday’s afternoon programme focuses on footage from the Waikato region and ends on a nostalgic note with the feature film “Don’t Let It Get You” A light-hearted comedy with music set in Sydney and Rotorua. It’s best described as a tonic film that doesn’t let the blues get you. When it finishes, you feel as if the time has gone too fast and you leave the theatre wanting to see it all over again. Produced and directed by John O Shea and starring Howard Morrison, Gary Wallace, Carmen Duncan with special guest star Kiri Te Kanawa. The celebrations finish on Sunday with a trip down memory lane and footage from the 1950’s.
So please come along and get your popcorn and celebrate the birthday of the South Waikato’s Performing Arts Centre.

A compilation of 19 films showing the Waikato in all its glory . The programme includes recreational activities - trout fishing, sports, and regattas. Power From the River , a rousing Government film on the development of hydro electric power on the Waikato River, showing the men who worked around the clock to build the stations will be shown. Newsreel clips include the 1948 Waikato Winter Show and the Frankton Tornado as well as the Queen’s visit to Turangawaewae Marae in 1954 and the Sole Brothers Circus performing in Matamata. MP Hilda Ross puts in an appearance and the 1956 Springbok game in Hamilton is played in front of a crowd of 31,000 people. The Wai Warriors stream clean up will take place on Thursday 16th July WHATEVER THE WEATHER. Instructions are as follows:

Be at the Mason Reserve access via Galway Crescent at 1pm on Thursday 16th July. We shall work until 4pm.
We preferably need numbers by Tuesday 14th July - please book your place with the information centre - 883 7284.
You need wet weather gear if it is raining.
Gumboots or sturdy work shoes.
Gloves to protect your hands.
Spade or digging gear.

Afternoon tea is provided.

Don't worry if you do not have any of the above - many hands make light work & we'd love to have you along..

It is “Odyssey” time again at Putaruru Library

This programme is for age group 12-17 years and involves reading books and giving a verbal report to Library staff with points gained towards prizes with each book read. For written reviews there is also a draw each week to win a prize.

Enrolment begins on 15 June for one week. Reporting is from 22 June to 31 July and the programme finishes with a party to be held on 7 August.

LTCCP Submission at the South Waikato District Council...

Here is the recent submission to the South Waikato District Council from Pride In Putaruru on the LTCCP (long term plan)...I'm usually lucky enough to be behind the lens, but on this occasion, I had to be be on the other side..We had 6 major areas of concern for us - especially the Urban Design of which you will now know that we have funding for the actual concept - but then we shall have to find the funding to improve the look of Putaruru. Air quality, economic development were also on our submission headings with other categories falling under each one, time seems to fly so fast as you only have 10 minutes to have your say & answer questions..

New Prattler In Print..

Well, the new Prattler has gone to print and should be back to us this week for re-distribution...A massive issue this time - 12 whole pages with a big special on Communities and Schools - namely our schools - from Tirau right through to Lichfield... Lots of photographs, and already, we're underway with the next issue that has a focus on our trustees! As I've said before - and in this Prattler, we can't run any advertisements because we're currently funded by The Southern Trust - but it is crammed full of community information...Well the farms have finally got the rain that they have been waiting for - and with it for joe public comes the housewives nightmare - undryable clothes...I can't believe how excited I was last week to walk into Mitre 10 Putaruru and find a mobile clothes dryer - one that looks like a smaller version of my spinner outside, but stands alone and can dry the clothes by the fire without the need for an electric clothes dryer - my excitement of the find also highlighted my need for a new life maybe..I was beaming all the way home! Tough Kids..........Thank you St Mary's & Lichfield...

Wow - what resilient kids we have here in town - first the Putaruru College and Te Waotu kids working through a huge dump of rain, however today, I rang around all of our schools still to work on the waterway, and St Marys we definate that they wanted to plough on assisted by a team from Lichfield - the work needed to be done whatever the weather...Greg Shaw and his parks & reserves team brought along 500 plants to be dug in and the group ploughed through the work. Greg explained to the groups that they needed to dig a hole twice the size of the rootball to make it easier for the roots to go through the ground as they develop. He also showed how far the dirt should go up against the plants to prevent them from rotting off and dying.. Mrs White of St Marys collected the old plant pots to grow new natives from seed - and Greg Shaw is going to arrange delivery of the seeds. We cranked up the bbq and cooked over 150 sausages donated by Wallace Corp, gave the kids bottled water donated by New Zealand Quality Waters of Domain Road and the bread and chocolate bar was kindly paid for by His Worship Mayor Neil Sinclair. I would like to thank all of those involved especially the hard working kids who all we impecably behaved and our parent & teacher helpers who braved the cold & wet to assist us. Thank you to our sponsors, and I look forward to going back to see how much they have grown...

Mason Reserve / Oraka Walkway Clean Up.......

What a day. We had the big clean up planned today for down at the Mason Reserve - just beyond the Oraka Reserve. For those of you that slept through the torrential rain last night, the day was in dispute from 7am. A quick call to Greg Shaw at council, and we made the decision to go to Friday which was our planned postponement day. Every school and helper had been rung by 8am, newspapers and toilets postponed, and Fridays meetings brought forward to Wednesday so that we could clear the decks for Friday - however, my boys were alarmed that they would now have to go to school. By 9am, things had started to clear up, and so Nina called from Putauru College to say that most of their kids had arrived at College in mufty and raving to go - so basically, could we go ahead with the college kids and start the clean-up and Fridays kids could do the planting....like I'm going to refuse free help! By 10am, the heavens opened and torrential rain poured until around 10.15am...Thankfully it cleared and we managed to get in an hour of clearing - my kids were most impressed that they got to go to school later AND they've completed another segment of PRIDE homework.

We have lots of planting organised with council for Friday, getting ready for the Wai Jazz for the water festival on 14th February next year.

The kids worked exceptionally hard, got through vast ammounts of work and had impeccable manners - so a MASSIVE thank you to Putaruru College and Te Waotu School for the first section of this stage of the clean-up, and heres hopefully to Friday with Lichfield, Putaruru Primary, St Mary's and Tirau School.....fingers crossed!

Many thanks to His Worship Mayor Neil Sinclair and Wallace Corporation for assisting Pride In Putaruru in providing refreshments for the children and helpers - including hot chips today and a sausage sizzle lunch on Friday.....

Well, the new version of the Prattler is out - and last week caused us to pull our hair out at a few things - character building my mother would have called it....I could think of many other phrases! Many thanks must go to Nolan from Odeon computers for your help ance again, and to Dave McPherson for your input too. We had hoped to get the paper out in time for Easter - however things outside our control meant that it arrived on Tuesday after it rendering the details of the co-operating Church services out of date.. That was one we'll just have to take on the chin for this time - going (or getting) to print for the first time in this style had it's fair share of complications - hopefully they have all been ironed out in time for the next one.

Speaking of the next one - we want to do a feature on weddings from this year of Putaruru people. If you or someone you know have been married recently - send us a photo to info@putaruru.co.nz in jpeg format with details of the ceremony (brief) and we'll get it into the newsletter - although if you are sending a photo on behalf of the bride & groom, we will need their permission to put it into print.

The school holidays are here, and despite the farmers needing rain badly, many parents are breathing a sigh of relief with the weather..If you're looking for something to do, why not revive the art of salt dough - cheap, safe and easy.

A MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS goes out today to Sue Arthur and her team at Over The Moon Dairy AND Fonterra Lichfield who have bothe won Gold Medals at the 2009 Cuisine Cheese Awards in Auckland last night......

The Cuisine Champion Artisan Cheese went to Over The Moon Dairy for their Galactic Gold.

The New World Champion Washed Rind Cheese Gold award went to Over the Moon Dairy for their Galactic Gold.

The Hally Labels Champion Cheddar went to Fonterra Lichfield for their cheddar aged up to 25 months....

Over The Moon also won a Silver for their Over The Moon Camembert in the Inovative Packaging Champion Soft White Rind section.

Fonterra Lichfield went on to win Silvers with their Cheddar aged up to 19 months AND their Cheddar aged between 26 and 36 months, along with a NZ Food Safety Authourity Champion New Cheese Silver with their Cheddar and a Silver in the NZSCA Champion Export Cheese section for their Taupo cheese, and a Bronze in this section for their Gouda.

The competition is the crem de la crem of Cheese Awards and is very well contested, so well done from us all at Pride In Putaruru........

A & P Show Arts & Crafts Winners...

Wow - what fantastic entries we had to the Arts & Crafts section of Putaruru on Show - over 200 in total and considering the awful weather, we had around 200 viewers at the granstand. The tough decision to cancel the A & P Show, Axemen and Top Team was taken at 6am on Saturday morning, and whilst the axe men can't chop in the rain, it was the wind that stopped the A & P Show from going ahead, as the wind spooks the stock, and we had a 9m inflatable slide coming in for the Top Team event - we had visions of a scene from The Wizard Of Oz flying off into the sunrise...We had worked so hard with the schools with the arts & crafts since last December that there was never any chance of us cancelling.

Because of the met service weather forecast and the fact that we couldn't guarantee the roof in the grandstand, we couldn't put any artwork into the grandstand until the morning of the show - which saw Bex, Nat and myself up at 5am to set up working by car light as we couldn't find the light box which is in some random place in the building, we laughed, laughed and laughed some more and learned a big lesson. Finally we got there and here are the winners..

The Arts and Crafts is going ahead as planned in the Grandstand at Glenshea Park.

A and P Show - has been cancelled.

Hi everyone - well the A & P Show is on tomorrow - and as we all know, the weather is none to flash to say the least....Here are the status updates:

Arts & Crafts: Will go ahead whatever the weather as it is inside.
Top Team - Will go ahead if it is raining - not if it gets too windy.
A & P Show - going ahead at this time.
Woodchoppers - will go ahead at this time.

Information For The Arts & Crafts........

It was great to see so much interest from the children when we went around all the schools on Monday. As promised, here we have some links to sites that will give you some ideas for creating your entries for the Arts and Crafts section of Putaruru on Show at the Putaruru A&P Show.

CARD MAKING and SCRAPBOOKING

There is a lot of great sites for card making and scrapbooking on the internet, click here to see some examples of scrapbooking by kids. Here are some great examples done by kids here in New Zealand.

There are fantastic cards to see on this BLOG - we love looking at this site!

Don't forget that clip art can be a great source for images for your cards - and dafont has some amazing free fonts to download......Not only do they do fonts, but they have swirls & images (called dingbats) - check out the 001 Starship Gamma font HERE..how cool is that?

For those that have the cooking channel on Sky, there is an amazing programme called 'Ace of Cakes' and this is their website here...This is the website that we loved when doing Think Pink in town.... click HERE then click on each of the circles for a close up...! Trade me also has a great range of decorations for cupcakes too.......

The Warehouse has a fantastic range of cheap jewellry findings such as wire, closures and lots of cost effective beads.....

Don't forget that you can make your own beads from paper or clay.
You could also try using bread dough clay.

STITCHED ITEM

Sewing Projects for Young Children.
There are many suitable sewing projects for children of all ages. Young children will enjoy simple projects, working with large, round-ended needles and felt or burlap. Simple shapes can be cut out for the youngsters to stitch around. Easy shapes include flowers, hearts, circles and stars. Looking through free clipart shapes can be a useful way to find patterns that can be printed and copied onto felt.
A more advanced project would be to stitch the two shapes together and stuffed. If the shape was a teddy or an animal such as a dog, then this could make a cute toy.

Sewing Projects for Older Children
For older children then projects could include making soft toys. These can be great fun and the children can chose to make their toy cute and cuddly or horrible and scary. Giving a child a couple of old socks, some scrap fabric and some stuffing could result in some interesting results. Glove puppets are also fun to make.
Other ideas include purses, boot-bags, pillow cases and pencil cases.

So hopefully this gives you all ideas and inspiration. Don't forget that Paper Zone, Coin Save and Toy World in Putaruru have a vast selection of craft supplies available. How great it is to support local!!!

The age categories are as follows:
Kindergarten and New Entrants,

Year 1 – 3,

Year 4 / PRIDE Bronze medal level,

Year 5/ PRIDE Silver medal level,

Year 6 / PRIDE Gold medal level,

Year 7 / PRIDE Platinum medal level

Year 8 / PRIDE Diamond medal level,

Year 9, 10 & 11,

Year 12 & 13,

Categories for 2009 are:
Painted canvas or standard painting no bigger than A3 in any medium.
* 3 Handmade cards or 1 scrapbook page.
1 Stitched item - either hand, embroidery or machine.
* Best decorated cupcake (must have 3 the same in any size)
Beaded necklace or bracelet.
* Please note that for kindergarten, New Entrants, Year 1,2 & 3, only 1 handmade card and 1 cupcake is needed.
Entry forms are available at the Information Centre, and also via email.
Completed forms must be returned to the Putaruru Information Centre by Monday 23rd February 2009

Finally...

Well - the initial run of work has been dealt with and now back to normal...So much has been happening here and all of it is positive! To date this year, we have been busy with trying to aquire more funding (like many others) and the following:

Arranging new colour schemes for the planters for 2009 / 2010 with Greg Shaw from council and the schools & kindy's in Putaruru.
The P.R.I.D.E. system for homework in many of our Primary / Intermediate children will now be linked in with us to provide community based homework.
The A & P Show taking place on the 28th February - it's back to the old days with a new twist. We're working with all early learning providers, schools and home schoolers accross Putaruru to bring the Arts & Crafts back to Putaruru A & P Show. Check out our website for full details including the registration forms.
March 28th sees the global EARTH HOUR where we are arranging a power free night of entertainment in Glenshea Park - we hope to see you all there...
